Surface, Colour and Landscape (2 Day Workshop, Autumn 26)

On Day One, you’ll explore warm and cool palettes and discover how they can completely shift the atmosphere and emotional tone of a landscape. You’ll also investigate complementary colour relationships and learn how to mix beautifully muted, subtle, and desaturated colours without everything turning muddy. Expect plenty of guided exercises, demonstrations, and practical information you can immediately apply to your own work.

On Day Two, you’ll use these colour studies to create an expressive contemporary landscape painting. Working with big brushes, energetic mark-making, and layered surfaces, you’ll learn how to build texture, depth, and a sense of history within a painting. Along the way, you’ll receive plenty of support with composition, editing, and knowing when to stop- helping you keep the freshness and spontaneity alive without overworking the piece and becoming too detailed.

All materials are included, and you’ll receive a primed board ready to paint on during the second day.

This course takes place in the Art Studio. Please note that regrettably this room is not accessible to wheelchair users due to necessary fire evacuation regulations. The main entrance is level access. On your right, there is a button to open the automatic door to the Café Bar. Head forwards into the Gallery, turn right up the ramp and proceed through two sets of double doors (please note there is no automatic button to open these doors). Please be aware that there are low ceilings and low door frames in this area. Turn right and proceed up the stairs (six steps, a landing, and then seven steps). Proceed through the doors straight ahead, then another set of doors straight ahead, and turn right through another door into the Art Studio.
